In contrast to the summer water purification, the New Year’s Eve purification is a purification of fire.
This is the only ritual in Japan where all sins and impurities are purged by the power of divine fire.
Sins committed during the year are entrusted to a doll, which is then burned on the spot to purge all sins and wickedness.
After the purification process is complete, we welcome the new year.
The ceremony will be held at the Fire Hall, where the sacred fire is enshrined, from 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
If you are unable to attend the ceremony on the day, you can still send your sins and impurities to the shrine by mail, along with an atonement fee.
